Global Education
Our Global Education program is an inspiring blend of awareness, action, and real-world learning
At Hyla, Global Education is more than a subject—it’s a way of learning that connects students to the wider world with purpose and curiosity. From the first days of middle school through the final years of high school, our students explore pressing global issues, build cultural understanding, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. Through hands-on projects, interdisciplinary inquiry, and partnerships with global learning networks, Hyla empowers students to think critically, act compassionately, and engage meaningfully with communities both near and far.
Global Education in the Middle School: Cultivating Global Awareness & Action
-
At the heart of Hyla’s middle school curriculum, Global Education brings the world into the classroom by infusing global content across subjects, helping students develop cultural understanding and a sense of global interconnectedness.
-
This programming builds students into “agents of action,” inviting them to actively engage with the world around them through community-based projects. Activities might include initiatives like designing better recycling systems, gardening to support school sustainability, or applying design thinking to solve local challenges.
-
Past projects showcase this in action—like celebrating Earth Day through hands-on learning: students took photos of spring blooms, considered how to grow their own vegetables, and sorted recyclables in an interactive scavenger hunt.
-
The curriculum also emphasizes exploring global perspectives and histories. For example, a Global Education class encouraged students to examine Native American experiences around Thanksgiving—leading conversations on different narratives and the importance of healing and inclusivity.
Global Education in the Upper School: Global Learning in Action
-
In high school (grades 9–12), Hyla’s Upper School expands global learning through digital membership in consortiums like Global Online Academy and One Schoolhouse. These platforms broaden students’ access to rigorous courses taught by educators from a global network, offering real-world perspectives from around the globe.
-
Here, global engagement is taken further through Electives, Apertures, and Panorama—immersive, multi-week courses that invite students to tackle complex global challenges (such as climate change or social justice) through deep inquiry and experiential learning.
