Experiential Learning: Middle School
The entire Hyla Middle School program is designed around the unique developmental needs of this age—a remarkable time of emerging independence, identity, and voice. These years are transformative and we make them count.
We believe that every Middle School student needs...

The extra push that says “Go further. We expect more from you and we know you’re capable of it.”

More freedom and choice—and the responsibility and accountability that come with them.

Academic and social growth takes practice and mistakes are part of that process. Second chances encourage students to try again and keep going.

The space to take a stand, make a plan, and be the solution.

To be truly seen and heard by the adults in their lives.

The supported leap: trust and encouragement to try something new.

Close connections and relationships so they can experience the trust, tolerance, and respect of belonging.

Vulnerability is a life skill, not a state of being. When you open yourself up to other people, what you get back is different than if you stay closed.

Fresh air and space so they can move their bodies and be silly, because they are still children.
Middle School Electives
At Hyla, middle school students don’t have to wait until high school to follow their curiosity—they can dive into electives right now. It’s a rare and remarkable opportunity, giving young adolescents the freedom to explore passions, try new skills, and take ownership of their learning in a way that’s both exciting and empowering. From creative arts to outdoor adventures, hands-on science to service projects, electives offer something beyond the ordinary school experience: the chance to discover talents, stretch comfort zones, and learn in ways that feel fresh, relevant, and deeply engaging. Exploration Week
Exploration Week is a signature Hyla experience that takes students into new territory—geographically, personally, interpersonally, and academically. This multi-age, week-long program invites them to explore new topics, new places, and new parts of themselves through hands-on, real-world learning.
Each trip partners with organizations or individuals beyond Hyla, giving students access to new voices, perspectives, and expertise in authentic settings. These experiences are intentionally designed to push beyond comfort zones and established friendships, opening doors to fresh connections, emerging passions, and unexpected areas of growth.
Away from the routines of daily school life, students step into different roles—leader, motivator, navigator, cook—embracing shared responsibility, problem-solving, and adventure. The challenges and discoveries of the week build resilience, self-trust, and lasting friendships. Parents often tell us their children return “standing a little taller,” a reflection of the pride and confidence that come from tackling challenges, embracing new experiences, and realizing just how much they can do.
Much like adolescence itself, Exploration Week is packed with exciting potential. We’ve seen time and again how these journeys ignite curiosity, strengthen community, and leave students with memories and skills that last a lifetime.
